So, we’re over halfway through the month, and some of us are definitely ready for November to be over. The fall blues are kicking in, and we’re looking for the pick-me-ups of the December festivities! However, before we all disregard November too much, let’s take a closer look and see what makes this particular day special.
On this day
Ivan the Terrible attacked his son.
In 1581, Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible attacked his son and heir, Ivan Ivanovich, with a scepter following an argument between the two. This event led to his son's death three days later.
Henrietta Maria’s funeral took place.
In 1669, the French State funeral for Henrietta Maria was held. She was the princess of France and the widow of English King Charles I.
UNESCO was founded!
In 1945, UNESCO was officially founded. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation is still one of the most important organizations in the world to this day – and they are largely responsible for recognizing and protecting sites of natural and historical interest.
African-American girls had to be escorted to school.
In 1960, US marshals had to escort four six-year-old African-American girls to school. This was due to the fact that the girls had received death threats for attending a once all-white public school in New Orleans. Race riots also occurred due to the event.

Whether it be with our loved ones, our co-workers, or even strangers we come across, we can all forget our patience and make snap judgments and comments. However, those snap judgments and comments can be harmful beyond measure. Of course, it’s also important to remember to be tolerant of different cultures and people who live all over the world – practice a little kindness today.
National Black Marketers Day
Every November 16th is National Black Marketers Day in the US. The day honors the achievements of Black marketers across the US and celebrates the role Black culture has played and how it continues to influence the marketing industry. The Black Marketers Coalition (BMC) is responsible for creating the holiday, and to celebrate, they usually organize events in the days leading up to it. You’ll likely come across some networking events and happy hour parties!
Clarinet Day
November 16th is also Clarinet Day! The clarinet may be an underappreciated instrument, but today, it has its shining moment. Believe it or not, the clarinet has played an important role in some of the most popular songs of all time, and you may enjoy it more than you even realize! If you’ve never tried playing a clarinet before, today might also be a good day to start.
