On May 9th, 1914, US President Woodrow Wilson officially announced May’s second Sunday was to become known as Mother's Day! This national holiday was created to celebrate mothers and their contributions to society. Today, Mother's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world with gifts, flowers, and other special gestures of appreciation - but it doesn’t always take place on May 9th!

On this day in 1922, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) formally adopted a superb stellar classification system created by American astronomer Annie Jump Cannon. On May 9th 1941, British intelligence at Bletchley Park successfully broke German spy codes using captured Enigma machines from the weather ship Muenchen. This allowed the Allies to decrypt crucial German communications, which greatly aided their war efforts - millions of lives were potentially saved!

May 9th 1992, the Salem Village Witchcraft Victims' Memorial was dedicated in Danvers, formerly known as Salem Village, to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the infamous witch trials. The memorial pays important tribute to the innocent victims who were accused, tried, and executed for witchcraft during the hysteria that swept through Salem in 1692.
