Polio was on the way out!

A pioneering medical treatment for polio, discovered and tested by Dr. Jonas Salk, was announced on this day back in 1953. The treatment would eventually roll out as a vaccine against the debilitating illness, with trials taking place from 1954. It’s now a staple treatment across the US.

The immensely controversial US involvement in Vietnam faced fierce protests across the country in the mid-60s. On March 26th 1966, a series of large events took place simultaneously across NYC, Chicago, and Washington DC.

Israel and Egypt agreed to a peace treaty.

On March 26th, 1979, Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin agreed to sign a peace accord between Egypt and Israel. It’s thought the agreement was drawn up based on the US’ Camp David Accords, presided over by then-US President Jimmy Carter.

Iron Mike began a stint behind bars.

Heavyweight boxer and world champion “Iron” Mike Tyson would start a jail sentence for a rape conviction in March 1992, having received a sentence for six years behind bars on March 26th.
