Let’s fight the Armada!
In 1588, in a daring move, the English unleashed their fiery arsenal upon the mighty Spanish Armada. Eight fire ships sailed downwind towards the tightly clustered enemy warships – and the resulting mayhem sent the Armada scattering, securing a strategic triumph for the English.

It was on July 28th 1794, that in a chilling turn of events, the French Revolution reached its climax. Maximilien Robespierre, a central figure in "the Terror," and 22 other leaders faced the guillotine as a result of their violence.
From slaves to citizens.
On this day in 1868, in an amazing step towards equality, US Secretary of State William H. Seward made a historic announcement. The 14th Amendment, ratified by states, granted citizenship upon former slaves. Society, thankfully, is much more inclusive now – but modern slavery is still rife, and there’s work left to do.

On July 28th, 1893, Kate Sheppard laid out an iconic petition for women's suffrage. More than 25,000 women, roughly a fifth of the adult European female population, added their signatures. This landmark document was delivered to New Zealand's parliament, a pivotal step towards achieving gender equality.
