What’s Happening in 2024?
2024 is just around the corner, which means millions of us are already looking forward to what’s coming up across the next 12 months. 2023 is going to take some beating as far as technological evolution and shocking moments are concerned – and while we don’t have a crystal ball here at Fact City, here are some events set to take place in 2024 worth looking out for.
In this year
January
Both China and Bangladesh will go to the polls in early January to decide their leaders – and meanwhile, over in Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo is expected to become the country’s latest President.
March
March will prove to be pivotal in the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as both nations’ voters will go to the polls to decide on who leads the country. At the time of writing, the final candidates for the Ukrainian election are unclear.
April
There are more meteor showers to look forward to around April 2024, with both the Lyrids and Eta Aquarids showers expected to cascade across the month. Better keep that telescope out…
June
June 2024 will finally see the full, legal release of the highly controversial movie “The Day The Clown Cried,” a Jerry Lewis picture which can legally be unveiled at the start of the month. The only known copy of the movie is available via the Library of Congress, and it won’t be aired elsewhere without the consent of Lewis’ estate. The movie focuses on the imprisonment of a circus clown in a Nazi concentration camp.
July
Olympic fever returns in late July, as France takes up the torch to host 2024’s hotly-anticipated Summer Games. It’ll open in the Stade de France in the capital of Paris.
August
Big changes are afoot in Indonesia this August, as the capital of Jakarta is slated to give way to the city of Nusantara, which will take over the role around the 17th.
September
The works of JRR Tolkien will enter the public domain as of September 2nd – but largely in nations across Africa, South America, and Asia. Be prepared for hobbitmania all over again!
October
Alongside it being a big political month for countries such as Lithuania, Uruguay, Georgia, and Venezuela going to the polls, a potential political record is set to be broken. Should former US President Jimmy Carter be still living as of October 1st, 2024, he will be the only US President in history to reach 100 years old. He’s already the oldest-living President on record.
November
By late November 2024, US citizens will go to the polls to ultimately decide who will lead the country from 2025 onward. Mass media right now is suggesting another clash between incumbent President Joe Biden and ex-President Donald Trump, despite the latter's ongoing legal investigations.
December
December 17th 2024 is the deadline for the UK to dissolve its Parliament and prepare for a General Election. This effectively means the country might have a new ruling party – and Prime Minister – by January 29th, 2025.
2024 is the year of the…
…dragon! People born in the years 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, and 2024 will all be recognized as legendary fire breathers according to the Chinese Zodiac. Dragons born in these years are considered extremely charismatic, are naturally lucky, and wield a lot of intelligence. Therefore, many people believe 2024 will be a year of luck and prosperity for those with dragons in their lives. There won't be another dragon year until 2036.
