The Gregorian Calendar

Britain started adapting to the Gregorian calendar for the first time.

In 1752, all nations and territories within and under the British Empire adopted the Gregorian calendar. Since the Gregorian calendar was 11 days shorter than their previous one (the Julian model), riots unfolded as people believed the government had stolen 11 days from them! Thankfully, things have settled down on that front since then!

A French Constitution was passed.

In 1791, the new French Constitution passed via the National Assembly. It declared France as a constitutional monarchy – despite the fact the country had witnessed betrayal via its king and the fact the nation was moving toward a more republican ideal.

Slave abolitionist Frederick Douglass escaped.

In 1838, abolitionist Frederick Douglass made his escape from slavery. He did so by disguising himself as a sailor – he would go on to become one of the most important figures in US civil rights, eventually even becoming the first African American nominated as Vice President.

The US celebrated Labor Day for the first time.
