The Treaty of York was signed.
In 1237, the Treaty of York was signed between King Henry III (England) and King Alexander II (Scotland). The treaty established a boundary between the two nations, which has been mostly unchanged ever since!
Vasco Nuñez de Balboa made history.
In 1513, Spanish explorer Vasco Nuñez de Balboa crossed the Panama Isthmus. In doing so, he became the first recorded European to ever see the Pacific Ocean.
The birth of the remote control took place!
In 1906, Leonardo Torres Quevedo successfully demonstrated the Telekino at Bilbao, building a boat from the shore in front of a huge crowd! It was indeed considered to be the birth of the remote control – and now you know who to thank for not having to get up and change the TV channel manually!
Henry Ford changed the workweek for good.
In 1926, motoring mogul Henry Ford announced that there would, from then on, be an 8-hour, 5-day work week for the workers at the Ford Motor Company. For many of us, that is still the case for workers across the West – though there are continued rumblings about a four-day workweek quietly emerging!
Sandra Day O’Connor became an integral part of the Supreme Court.
In 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor was sworn in as a US Supreme Court Justice. She was the first woman ever to do so!
