In 1356, the English forces under Edward the Black Prince ceremoniously defeated the French at the Battle of Poitiers during the Hundred Years' War. They captured the French King John II as a result.

New Zealand made history for women everywhere.

New Zealand became the first country ever to grant all women the right to vote back in 1893! To this day, not all countries around the world have given women the right to vote, a right that countless people have fought for for centuries. Millions commemorate NZ today for breaking that deadlock.

An earthquake hit Mexico City.

In 1985, Mexico City suffered an 8.1 magnitude earthquake, which killed around 10,000 people. About 250,000 more were left homeless – and the total property damage is said to have cost as much as $5 billion (in 1985 money).

Taliban

The Taliban struck in Afghanistan.

In 2019, a Taliban suicide truck bombing occurred at a hospital in Zabul Province, southern Afghanistan. The bombing killed 22 people and injured 90 more.

Cumbre Vieja eruption

The Cumbre Vieja erupted.

In 2021, the Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted on La Palma, the Spanish island. It was the volcano’s first eruption since 1971! That means this ridge in the Canary islands is now officially active again – caution is advised if you’re vacationing nearby!
