On this day
The War of the Roses took place.
In the midst of the War of the Roses in 1470, Henry VI of England reclaimed his position on the English throne. This restoration occurred following the victory of the Earl of Warwick over the Yorkists in a decisive battle.
The “Greatest Show on Earth” made its debut in New York City.
In 1873, P.T. Barnum’s circus debuted in New York City. It may ring a bell as it was the inspiration for the film The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman. Barnum is known as the father of the American circus to many people, but the movie reportedly glossed over some controversial aspects of his life.
Nicholas II issued the October Manifesto.
In 1905, the October Manifesto was issued by Tsar Nicholas II. In the manifesto, he granted civil liberties and accepted the first Parliament, known as the Duma.
The Bosphorus Bridge was completed.
In 1973, the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul, Turkey, was completed. The bridge connected Europe and Asia over the Bosporus for the first time ever.
Sweden recognized Palestine.
2014 saw Sweden become the first nation in the western European Union to formally recognize the State of Palestine, something which has proven contentious over the past decades. The UN General Assembly recognized the state after Yasser Arafat made a declaration in November 1988.

Candy Corn is probably one of the most traditional treats given away at Halloween in the US. Yet, if you ask anyone, it is never anyone’s favorite treat! In fact, most people eat it probably more out of habit than actual liking – yet, it’s iconic enough to have its own special day!
