Australia was discovered!
In 1616, the Dutch East India Company ship, The Eendracht, made the important discovery of Dirk-Hartog Island. That is to say, it discovered Australia for the Europeans!
A prison opened in Philadelphia.
In 1829, the Eastern State Penitentiary opened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the world’s first prison to entirely use the solitary confinement system intended for rehabilitation. It was designed by Robert Strickland but eventually closed in 1971. Now it serves as a museum.
The Charge of the Light Brigade took place.
In 1854, the Charge of the Light Brigade took place as part of the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War. Over 100 people were killed during the charge.
Guatemala was hit by an earthquake.
In 1902, Santa Maria, in Guatemala, was hit by an earthquake. It is believed that about 6,000 people died from the natural disaster.
The UN voted to expel Taiwan.
In 1971, the United Nations decided to vote and expel Taiwan, ruled by Chinese nationalists. They also decided to allow the admittance of the Communist People's Republic of China. To this day, Taiwan is still not part of the UN, and there continues to be political contention over recognizing the state with regard to its position alongside China.
