In 1813, Mexico finally became independent. It was declared independent of Spain by the Chilpancingo Congress, and it’s remained its own free state ever since – a good reason to mark today, we think!

China’s government ministries changed up.

In 1906, the Chinese Government ministries were reorganized. The act was part of the movement towards constitutional government. However, the Manchu princes maintained their control, and there was actually little change for everyday citizens.

Mahatma Gandhi was arrested.

In 1912, Mahatma Gandhi was arrested for leading the Indian miners’ march in South Africa. He became a voice for the voiceless and for peace until his death in 1948, remaining an icon of protest to this day.

The Bolshevik Revolution began.

In 1917, the Bolshevik Revolution began with the bombardment of Petrograd's famous Winter Palace during Russia's October Revolution. The Revolution led to the end of Tsarist rule in Russia, and the installation of Vladimir Lenin as leader of the Soviet Union, or the Communist Party.

Iran was placed under military rule.

In 1978, the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, put Iran under military rule. General Gholām Reza Azhāri formed the government. This ruling state has been in power in the country since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

As you probably know, habitats and the environment at large are at grave risk of mass damage through conflict and war. From rivers and plains to forests and oceans, can all be deeply affected by the consequences of war. Therefore, this occasion was created to encourage the protection of the environment – not just in the name of protecting the beautiful world around us, but in an attempt to encourage people to look beyond physical conflict, too. Maybe some day we can claw back the damage we’ve done through unnecessary wars.

Marooned Without a Compass Day is celebrated on November 6th every year to shed a light on the direction we’re all going in. Or, in some cases, our lack of direction. Everyone is encouraged to take the time today to assess where they are in their lives, whether or not they are happy, and what they can do to move forward with their plans, projects, hopes, and dreams in the quest of achieving all they want.
