On this day in 1835, James Gordon Bennett, Sr. published the first issue of the New York Herald, a daily newspaper that cost only one cent. It quickly became one of the most popular newspapers in New York City and was known for its sensational journalism and coverage of crime and scandals.

In 1837, John Deere, a blacksmith from Vermont, created the first steel plough in Grand Detour, Illinois. On May 6th 1840, Great Britain issued the "Penny Black," the world's first adhesive postage stamp.
