On This Day - May 15th
May 15th brings us some very important birthdays, historical events, and national holidays to celebrate! It's a huge day for women's rights, the LGBT community, and for world records. So, let's dive right into all of it! Here are some of the most important events to have ever taken place on May 15th.
On this day
Anne Boleyn stood accused.
On this day in 1536, King Henry VIII's wife, Anne Boleyn, was famously accused of adultery and incest with her brother George, Lord Rochford. A four-day trial ensued, with her eventual beheading being the outcome.
The Suffragette movement took a step forward in the US.
In 1869, today was the day that the National Woman's Suffrage Association was formed in New York. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton first founded the organization. While we're still some way off true equality, women everywhere owe a huge debt to the Suffragettes.
The LGBT community had a huge breakthrough!
On this day back in 1897, Magnus Hirschfeld formed the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee in Berlin. It is said to have been the very first LGBT rights organization ever set up. Again, we've come a long way since then - but there's still lots of work left to do.
Amy Johnson set a world record.
In 1936, legendary pilot Amy Johnson finally arrived in Croydon, England, having set off from South Africa. She made the journey in four days and sixteen hours, which was a record at the time! She was the very first woman to fly completely solo from London over to Australia (so no stranger to records, then!).
A plan for D-Day was put into motion.
Back in 1944, US President Eisenhower, Field Marshal Montgomery, UK Prime Minister Churchill and King George VI came together for a meeting that would mark the history books! They gathered to discuss their plan for D-Day - which would become a hugely successful Allied evacuation of Normandy.
