Pierre de Coubertin formed the IOC.
Without the IOC, the International Olympic Committee, we wouldn't enjoy the fantastic spectacles of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. On this day back in 1894, Pierre de Coubertin helped form the body that would keep sports in check.
Antarctica was preserved.
While it may seem strange now, there was the need to preserve Antarctica back in 1961, amid concerns during the Cold War. Specifically, on June 23rd, 1961, a treaty was signed to agree that no arms testing or any form of military activity would occur on the continent.
The Nintendo 64 first went on sale in Japan.
In 1996, Nintendo dared to leap into the third dimension with a console that promised whole new ways to play adventures starring the likes of Mario. The console would go on to sell almost 33 million units worldwide, though the Sony PlayStation (PS1) would prove more popular over time.
Britney took a stand.
In more recent news, in 2021, pop star Britney Spears formally requested that a judge end her court-ordered conservatorship held by her father. The case was covered by the media en masse, and thankfully, Britney eventually won her right to freedom!
