📆 On This Day - June 11th
Now, you may be thinking that June 11th is just another day to get through, but did you know that June 11th has proven to be one of the most notable dates in modern history? No spoilers until we dive straight in… but make sure to have some multicolor yarn handy, that's all we're saying…
On this day
The emperor freed thousands.
In the year 631, Emperor Taizong of Tang of China succeeded in freeing close to 80,000 Chinese prisoners who faced capture during the transition from Sui to Tang. He did so by sending envoys to the Xueyantuo carrying gold and silk in exchange for the prisoners.
One of the US’s most important committees took shape.
Back in 1776, the United States Continental Congress built a committee to help create the Declaration of Independence. The committee comprised Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert R. Livingston, and Benjamin Franklin.
JFK spoke out on segregation.
In 1963, US President of the time, John F Kennedy, finally stated that segregation was morally wrong, and that it was indeed "time to act". That is definitely an understatement - as we all know thanks to the lessons we've learned through history.
Freedom Fest took place!
In 1988, Freedom Fest, an anti-apartheid benefit and tribute concert for Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday, took place! Some of the performers included Whitney Houston, Phil Collins, Dire Straits, Stevie Wonder, Tracy Chapman, and more!
We all got to live among the dinosaurs!
In 1993, today was the date that the classic Jurassic Park released to the public! The film, directed by Steven Spielberg, set a box office weekend record, earning an incredible $502 million at the time! As you may already know, it went on to spawn sequels – with the Jurassic World series earning even more box office dollars.
Special Days Falling on June 11th
Every day is special for somebody out there - and June 11th isn't just celebrated by individuals having birthdays, but also fans of yarn bombing, German chocolate cake, and even corn on the cob! We're not joking – here are some special days you may wish to mark in your own way today.Yarn Bombing Day
What is yarn bombing, anyway? As it happens, it's the art of knitting patterns onto public fixtures. Think of it as somewhat like graffiti with yarn! Its origins are said to emanate as recently as 2011, but people have been crocheting sculptures and tree stumps for much longer. If you're good with a needle or two, today's a good day to show off what you can do!
National German Chocolate Cake Day
As far as chocolate cakes go, very few meet the incredible standards of a German chocolatier – and yes, you really can taste the difference. They’re sweet, dense, and magnificent! So, take the time to indulge your sweet tooth with an authentic German chocolate cake if you can – or, why not try a recipe you find online?
National Corn On The Cob Day
Speaking of sweet, who doesn't love sweet corn? Ok, not everyone – but still, these golden little vegetables are some of nature's best, and they never taste quite as good as they do on the cob! So, whether you like it boiled or cooked on the barbecue, today is the day to eat as much corn on the cob as you wish! Just make sure you have the dental floss ready…
