On this day
Louisiana and South Carolina made an important decision.
In 1868, Louisiana and South Carolina became the last states of all to ratify the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Amendment guaranteed civil rights – and many would say it was a long time coming. Thankfully, it's ingrained in law now, but there's still plenty of work left to do.
A royal engagement took place!
In 1947, the British press announced the engagement of Britain’s Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten! That’s Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, of course. The two were married for 74 years until Prince Philip’s death in 2021. Elizabeth would pass away a year later, in September 2022.
Spain made a choice.
In the same year, 1947, Spain voted for the Franco monarchy. He remained the country’s dictator until his death in 1975 – and was responsible for tens of thousands of deaths across a brutal dictatorship regime.
Nintendo released an important game!
In 1981, Nintendo released Donkey Kong, the arcade game in Japan. The game was devised by Shigeru Miyamoto, who would later go on to spin the game's playable hero – Mario – into a gaming icon of his own right. Donkey Kong is still regarded as one of the most important arcade games of all time, and may be considered the first-ever "platform" game.
