As an official commonwealth of the USA, Puerto Rico claimed its own ruling government on this day back in 1952. The nation remains closely linked to the US to this day, and many even consider it to be a potential future state of its own!

FIDEL CASTRO

The Cuban Revolution began.

The Cuban uprising is said to have first started on this date back in 1953, beginning with an unsuccessful attack upon the Moncada Barracks by a group of determined rebels led by Fidel Castro. As you may know, Castro eventually took power – and would stay in charge from 1959 through to 2008!

The Space Shuttle Discovery was launched.

In 2005, the Space Shuttle Discovery was launched on the STS-114 mission. This marked NASA's first shuttle flight following the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster!

Pratibha Patil

Pratibha Patil made political history in India.

On this day in 2007, India swore in their first-ever female President – Pratibha Patil, a lawyer turned politician. She’d serve in the post until 2012.

The day was originally set for December 31st, but has since moved to July 26th!
