Great fire of Rome

The Great Fire of Rome devastated the city.

In the year 64 AD, The Great Fire of Rome began. It resulted in widespread devastation and later led to the persecution of Christians by Emperor Nero. It was "Great" enough for us to still be talking about it hundreds of years on!

Fort Wagner

The Battle of Fort Wagner came to an end.

In 1863, the final day of the Battle of Fort Wagner during the American Civil War took place. The Union Army suffered heavy casualties during the battle, which is also known to many as the Second Assault on Morris Island. It’s the subject of several famous paintings and artworks.

Adolf Hitler

Hitler published Mein Kampf.

Adolf Hitler, the fascist leader of Nazi Germany, published the first infamous volume of his manifesto, Mein Kampf, on July 18th, 1925. The book would receive bans all over the world but would provide the roots for Nazism heading towards the 1930s. Hitler and the Nazis would eventually commit mass genocide and ignite World War II.

Intel was born.

In 1968, the Intel Corporation was founded in Santa Clara, California. It was created by Robert Noyce, Gordon Moore, and Andrew Grove. Intel is, of course, famous for developing processors for laptops and desktop computers everywhere. Without Intel, we’d arguably be further behind in the technological revolution than expected.

In 1995, the Soufrière Hills volcano in Montserrat erupted! The eruption triggered a series of eruptions that devastated the island's southern half. What’s interesting about this particular volcano is that it was dormant for a long time – and has only started erupting again in the three decades since.
