On this day back in 1907, Leo Baekeland - a chemist based in Belgium - announced the creation of Bakelite. Although it may not sound too familiar to you, it was the first-ever synthetic plastic used for a variety of manufacture!

Farman MF.7 hydroplane

Naval missions took to the skies!

February 5th 1913 marks the maiden naval air mission - it was performed by two Greek military aviators, Michael Moutoussis and Aristeidis Moraintinis. They completed their project in a Farman MF.7 hydroplane.

Back in 1917, February 5th was the day that Mexico’s current constitution was put into place - it created a federal republic with the powers separated into three different branches; executive, judicial, and legislative.

In 1917, the Congress of the United States passed the Immigration Act on February 5th. It was created to reduce immigration by imposing literacy tests on any foreign visitors arriving into the US. The act was passed despite President Woodrow Wilson’s veto - he didn’t think it had a place in the constitution!

The American production and distribution company United Artists was launched in 1919. It was created by Mary Pickford, D. W. Griffith, Douglas Fairbanks, and Charlie Chaplin!
