After spending 27 years in prison, activist Nelson Mandela was released in 1990 on February 11th. For the first 18 years of imprisonment, he had neither a bed nor plumbing. He was allowed an annual meeting with a single visitor and to receive and write only one letter every six months. His release is still celebrated to this day, even long after his passing.
