In 533, Byzantine General Belisarius defeated the insurgent force known as the Vandals. He did so under the orders of King Gelimer at the Battle of Ticameron.
Bartolomeu Dias returned home
In 1488, Bartolomeu Dias returned to Portugal. In so doing, he became the first European we know of to sail around the Cape of Good Hope – and went down in the history books as one of the most famous explorers of all time! Columbus who?
The Andromeda Galaxy was observed for the first time
In 1612, German Astronomer Simon Marius became the first person ever recorded to have observed Andromeda galaxy through a telescope – though, bizarrely, people had been spotting planets and shooting stars with their naked eyes for centuries before!
Napoleon was given a funeral
In 1840, Napoleon Bonaparte was given a French state funeral in Paris 19 years after his death. He had originally been exiled and died away from his home, ending his reign – a fascinating life and military career that ultimately ended with him living away from the country he loved and led.
Homosexuality was no longer seen as an illness
In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) declared homosexuality is not a mental illness. However, in many countries around the world, it is still seen as an illegal offense. While it's popular to say we live in enlightened times, there's still a lot of work left to do.
