The Russians faced the Swedes.
In 1714, the Battle of Gangut took place. It was the first very important victory for the Russian Navy amid the Great Northern War against Sweden, taking place in what's now known as Hanko, a city in modern-day Finland.
A tragedy occurred in Iraq.
In 1933, the Iraqi Government slaughtered over 3,000 Assyrians in Sumail. The day became known as Assyrian Martyrs Day, and it’s still marked by those families impacted decades later.
Tokyo Telecommunications made huge technological strides.
Many of us already know Japan as an epicenter of technological innovation out East. However, on this day, a momentous occasion unfolded that would lead to even bigger strides in the decades to come. In 1955, Tokyo Telecommunications began selling its first transistor radios in Japan. The company was the precursor to Sony!
Operation Desert Shield began.
In 1990, the US deployed troops to Saudi Arabia. In doing so, they began Operation Desert Shield. The operation is better known as the start of the Gulf War campaign that led to Operation Desert Storm, and the liberation of Kuwait, which would take place in February 1991.
The Russo-Georgian War started.
In 2008, the first European war of the 21st century began as Georgia moved troops into the republics of South Ossetia and Tskhinva which Russia supported. It was the beginning of the Russo-Georgian War – a conflict which Russia's eventual invasion of Ukraine has since compounded.
