America inaugurated its first President.
April 30th is a huge day for anyone invested in US history, as it marks the beginning of the US Presidency! On this day back in 1789, George Washington was inaugurated as the very first President of the US. Traditionally, we now inaugurate Presidents much earlier in the year, but it’s the end of April when it all started!
NBC switched on!
NBC, or the National Broadcasting Company, first started airing public broadcasts on April 30th, 1939. The broadcast wasn’t made to homes, however, but at the World’s Fair in New York. Decades on, it’s one of the US’ biggest traditional broadcasters.
Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun died.
Notorious genocidal leader of the German Nazis, Adolf Hitler, killed himself (as did wife Eva Braun) in a hidden bunker in the capital of Berlin in 1945. This moment was one of the biggest dominoes leading to the end of World War II.
Toys on TV!
Another big TV first for April 30th - as on this day in 1952, US TV played host to the first-ever toy commercial. That toy? Mr. Potato Head - who has, of course, been immortalized in several Pixar movies since!
The World Wide Web first launched.
It’s thanks to people like Tim Berners-Lee that you’re able to read this list at all! Berners-Lee, a scientist at CERN, first launched the World Wide Web to the public on April 30th, 1989. It wouldn’t catch on in a big way until the late 90s, but look how far we’ve come!
