The US Civil War began.

On this day in 1861, the Battle of Fort Sumter began in South Carolina, marking the start of the American Civil War. Confederate forces bombarded the fort, which was held by Union soldiers, leading to surrender after two days of fighting. The conflict ultimately resulted in the deaths of over 600,000 Americans and the abolition of slavery.

On April 12th, 1954, the iconic rock and roll song "Rock Around The Clock" was recorded by Bill Haley and His Comets. The song was a huge success, reaching number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles chart and helping to popularize rock and roll as a genre.

On April 12th, 1976, Anne Rice's debut novel "Interview with a Vampire" was published by Knopf.
