Bugatti is one of the most famous car brands in the world! Known for their incredible hypercars, original designs, and unmistakable engine purrs, it’s no wonder they’re so popular. But how much do you know about this iconic motor brand? Here are some fun facts about Bugatti to keep in mind.
1. Bugatti wasn’t always a car giant.
Although we tend to associate Bugatti with cars, they started out making trains! In fact, back in the 1930s, Bugatti trains were known for going particularly fast and even breaking world records!
2. Hot stuff!
Bugatti is known for doing the most that it can and even pushing the boundaries when it comes to engine innovations. However, sadly, sometimes that can-do attitude becomes very dangerous!
Back in 1939, one of the newest Bugatti engines started a fire during testing. Then, in 2001, the famous Veyron engine was so powerful and generated so much heat it very nearly burned down the factory! Better cool off!
3. They’re long-distance motor racing legends.
If you’re interested in racing, you may know that Bugatti is famous for winning the iconic Le Mans 24 Hours race – and they’ve done it twice! They won first in 1937, then again in 1939!
4. Bugatti produced a saloon – no, really.
Although we don’t tend to think of saloon cars when we think of Bugatti, they did, in fact, produce one! Bugatti produced the EB 112 in the 1990s. However, its time with Bugatti was short-lived as Volkswagen purchased it in 1998.
5. All hail the Veyron!
Arguably, Bugatti’s most famous car is the Bugatti Veyron. The car surpassed expectations and became one of the most celebrated hypercars on the road! But, did you know that the idea of the car was really more of a pipe dream, and it nearly avoided getting made at all?
Engineers didn’t believe that the desired potential of the Bugatti Veyron was possible and therefore told Ferdinand Piech, the leader of Bugatti at the time, to keep dreaming! However, thankfully he was proven right, and the world gained an incredible car in the bargain. Follow your dreams!
6. Now that’s a lot of heat…
One of the most interesting things about the Bugatti Veyron is that it needs no less than ten radiators to keep it running! Three radiators are needed for the engine, three to control the air-to-liquid intercoolers, one for the air conditioning, one for the engine oil, one to cool the transmission oil, and finally, one for the differential oil.
7. Going fast – but not very far!
If you dream of running a Bugatti Veyron at its top speed, go ahead (within local laws, of course)! However, you won’t get very far.
In fact, a 250 miles per hour drive in the Bugatti Veyron would only last for about 12 minutes. That’s simply because you’d very quickly run out of fuel!
8. An incredible feat at a financial loss.
As wonderful as the Bugatti Veyron is, Bugatti actually made it at a loss. It cost the company about $1.62 billion to make this iconic line, including the vehicle research, which they never managed to make up again off sales.
9. It’s all in the name!
As cool as Veyron sounds, Bugatti did not come up with the name! In fact, the name came from champion racing driver Pierre Veyron.
10. Making Michelin work!
We have all heard of Michelin and their top-notch tires. But did you know that Michelin had to make special tires for the Bugatti Chiron? For the Chiron to safely reach its potential 304 miles per hour sprint, Michelin had to design and make tires that could handle such blistering speed!
