1The Great Plague of London hit its peak.
In 1665, September 26th was the height of the Great Plague of London. 7,165 people had died in the week leading unto today, and it’s thought over 10,000 people passed away total. Sadly, as we all know too well, it wouldn’t be the last contagious disease to rock London or even the world!
2Amsterdam voted to support Prince William.
In 1688, the City Council of Amsterdam decided to support Prince William of Orange’s English invasion by vote. It would become known as the Glorious Revolution in the Netherlands, and it’s an important marker in European conflict history.
3New Zealand became a dominion.
In 1907, New Zealand and Newfoundland each became dominions of the British Empire. But, a little more on that later on – sit tight!
4The 1923 Commonwealth Conference took place.
In 1923, the Commonwealth Conference took place in London, England – and, during the conference, the UK came to agree that Dominions in the British Empire should have the right to make treaties with foreign powers. It was a step forward away from the Empirical rule of old.
5The world was introduced to Tintin!
In 1946, the first edition of The Adventures of Tintin was published by Hergé in Le Journal de Tintin! The character’s stories have gone on to delight generations of children and even made it to the big screen – the mystery-busting journalist is easily one of the most recognizable Belgian icons of all time.
