If you’re any kind of basketball fan, then there’s a good chance you will already know who Steph Curry is. Dubbed one of the best basketball players of our time, this modern legend continues to be one of the most interesting players to watch on the court – but what is it about Curry that makes the Golden State Warrior one of the most impressive players of the age?

What’s more, how much do you actually know about Curry and his career so far? Let’s dive into some fascinating facts.

1. Steph Curry is an Ohio native, but has a home in NC.

Stephen Curry, known nowadays by his nickname Steph, was born on March 14th, 1988, in the town of Akron, Ohio. His actual full name is Wardell Stephen Curry II, and he is one of three kids, with siblings Seth and Sydel Curry.

Interestingly, while he was born in Ohio, Curry actually grew up over in Charlotte, North Carolina – and, naturally, basketball played a large part in his youth. Here’s why…

2. His father was an NBA player, too.

It seems as though basketball runs in the blood for the Currys! Steph Curry’s father is Dell Curry, a famous NBA player for the Charlotte Hornets – explaining why the family was raised in NC.

What’s more, Steph isn’t the only one of the three kids to have followed in his father’s footsteps – his younger brother Seth is also a player in the NBA, appearing for his local Charlotte Hornets. Both Currys reportedly used to warm up with the Hornets, shooting with the players as they prepared for games.

Interestingly, Sydel Curry, Steph’s sister, is also in sport, but not basketball! She’s played volleyball at Elon University.

3. Basketball took Curry to Canada.

Curry had quite an interesting college basketball career – as you might imagine! He first went to a college in Toronto, as his father finished playing professionally for the Raptors. Steph started playing for the Queensway Christian College basketball team, leading them to a whole season completely undefeated – pretty clear he was a star from the start, then!

While in Toronto, he also played in a Toronto 5-0 club team, and during his time there, he even got to play against his fellow NBA players, Kelly Olynyk and Cory Joseph.

4. He moved back to the US to continue his career.

Once his father retired, Curry and the rest of his family moved back to Charlotte. He enroled at Charlotte Christian School and was soon picked for all-conference and even all-state, helping to lead his team to no less than three conference titles and three state playoffs.

Eventually, Curry headed for Davidson College, where he played basketball for the Davidson Wildcats. The school had been recruiting him since the tenth grade, which ultimately paid off.
During his time in college, he was named Southern Conference Player of the Year twice over – he really was a star in the making.

5. 2008 was a huge year for Steph Curry.

During his sophomore year, from 2007 to 2008, he had reached his full height of 6 ft. 2 – but, height isn’t the only reason why 2008 was such a remarkable year for the future icon.

During this year, Curry led Davidson to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. In so doing, he became a breakout star – and soon turned the heads of some of the most powerful people in national basketball.

6. He was selected by the NBA in 2009.

Just a year later and by February 2009, Steph Curry became Davidson College’s all-time leading scorer with 2,488 points won over his career – it’s safe to say they’re pretty proud of him!

That same year, in June, Curry was picked up by the Golden State Warriors with the seventh overall pick in 2009’s draft – making his rise to the NBA pretty meteoric!

7. Curry was recognised as a rookie with incredible potential.

Unsurprisingly, by this point, Curry was named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month several times over across 2009. He gained the title in January, March, and April. In so doing, he became the first and only rookie thus far to ever win the award three times!

Despite this accolade, he actually finished second for the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, with Tyreke Evans claiming the top award. Strange but true!

8. He is a 4-time NBA champion.

Right now, Steph Curry is a four-time NBA championship winner, and true to loyal form, all of his championships were won while playing with the Golden State Warriors. The team won in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022.

Curry has also unsurprisingly been named the NBA’s MVP twice over, in both 2015 and 2016. In fact, he is the first player in NBA history to be elected MVP by a unanimous vote.

And, if that wasn’t enough, he has also won the NBA Finals MVP, the NBA All-Star Game MVP a staggering ten times, and, as mentioned above, the NBA Western Conference Finals MVP! It’s safe to say he’s a pretty valuable player!

9. Many credit Curry with changing the game!

Although Curry is one of the more recent court superstars, his playing prowess has led many to claim he’s changed basketball for the better.

In particular, experts credit him for popularizing the trend of shooting three-pointers from far beyond the arc. He did so much for this specific move that that specific shooting zone is often called the “Curry range.”

10. He is a philanthropist, too.

Curry puts his fame and fortune to incredible use – his philanthropic work includes setting up initiatives to combat malaria and support greater access to education.

One of the biggest initiatives Curry supported back in 2012 was when he decided to donate three insecticide-treated mosquito nets for every three-pointer shot he successfully made.

As you can imagine, that resulted in delivering plenty of nets!

11. Curry has his own Foundation.

In 2019, Curry and his wife, Ayesha, launched their Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation. The California-based Foundation focuses on promoting access to quality education for all children and aims to fight child hunger.

They also help to provide safe areas for children to be able to play and stay active.

12. He married his teenage sweetheart.

Steph and Ayesha met at church in Charlotte in Toronto at the ages of 15 and 14 years old, respectively. They eventually got married on July 30th, 2011, and have two daughters and one son at the time of writing. Their daughters were born in 2012 and 2015, and their son in 2018.

As of the time of this fact file going to publication, the Currys are expecting a fourth child.

13. He’s a golfer, too!

If being a world-leading basketball player wasn’t enough, as it happens, Steph Curry is also very interested in golf! In fact, he has competed in several celebrity tournaments. He has reportedly been playing golf since he was ten years old.

He is known for being a scratch golfer – this is pretty rare, even for professional talent! Lucky for them, he chose basketball as his main sport.

14. Steph Curry has his own shoe line.

Naturally, becoming a big basketball star also means you’re likely to launch some apparel at some point – and Curry has followed in the footsteps of talent such as Michael Jordan in launching his own fashion range.

He has a popular signature shoe line with Under Armour, known as the Curry line. Thankfully, the Curry line has shoes for men, women, and kids, so the whole family is covered – and they’re not just for court legends, either!

15. He set an incredible NBA record in 2015.

In 2015, Steph Curry was publicly celebrated for becoming the first player ever in NBA’s vast history to hit 300 three-pointers in one season!

Since then, he has managed to reach 300 3-pointers twice more, meaning he’s achieved this incredible feat at least five times.

The only other players to ever achieve 300 3-pointers in one season are James Harden and Klay Thompson, and even they have a way to go before they beat Curry!

16. He is the only player in the game to average 30 points.

Believe it or not, Steph Curry is also the only player in NBA history to average over 30 points per game, all the while playing fewer than 35 minutes per game across a season. It’s an incredible accolade!

This has become almost expected from him as he is considered one of the best marksmen in the league’s history! There are few other three-point guards who hold a candle to Curry (and most fans know it!).

17. You’re always likely to see Curry wear 30.

Interestingly, Steph Curry’s jersey number is 30. However, it doesn’t have anything to do with his 30 points per game. That being said, it does have an important meaning – Curry’s father used to wear 30 when he was in the NBA, too – pretty safe to say 30 is Curry’s lucky number, then?

18. His current best is 268 consecutive games.

Steph Curry also holds the record for the most games in a row during which he’s made three-pointers. His longest streak went on for 268 consecutive games!

The only other player behind him is Damian Lillard, who has racked up a still-impressive 102 consecutive games with three-pointers, in particular made for the Milwaukee Bucks. However, as you can see, even he is quite a bit behind Curry – as are most people!

19. Curry has plenty of pre-game rituals.

Steph Curry is also known for having his own pre-game rituals. In fact, fans flood into the court seats over an hour before the game starts just to watch him warm up!

His pre-game ritual usually includes shooting long-range shots from the tunnel – it’s something of pre-game entertainment for his fans, but for Curry, it’s a way to warm up and be the best.

20. Curry is no stranger to advertising campaigns.

As you can imagine, Steph Curry has also appeared in several television commercials and endorsements over the years.

He has worked for brands he’s partnered with, such as Under Armour (as mentioned above), State Farm, and Brita. He also partners with brands the likes of Carmax and Rakuten. Therefore, even if you’re not a basketball fan, it’s likely you know Curry by his name and/or face!

23. He is devoted to his faith.

Steph Curry is a devout Christian and often credits his faith for his success. To be more precise, he has been very open and honest about being a Pentecostal Christian. He even spoke about his faith during one of his MVP speeches. He has also stated that he plays for God, which is why he famously pounds his chest and points upwards during his games.

You may notice that on one of his shoes, there is a lace loop with the number 4:13 written on it. This directly refers to a Bible verse reading, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” The same reference appears on his Instagram bio – he’s truly committed!

24. Curry is big on protein.

Reportedly, Steph Curry’s favourite meal is grilled chicken with sweet potato fries and a fresh side salad.

He is supposedly also very fond of salmon, pasta, rice, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli.
He has stated that he usually eats filling meals after his basketball games (as you might expect), usually with a protein such as chicken or salmon, and pasta or rice, with some kind of vegetables.

He even has a passion for cooking and often shares recipes and cooking videos on social media. Is there anything this guy can’t do?!

25. He has a fear of snakes!

Although it may seem as though he is an unflappable titan, Steph Curry has fears like we all do!
It has been reported that he has a serious fear of snakes, in particular. Supposedly, he has had this fear since he was a child – thankfully, it’s unlikely he will come across many of them during his day job!

26. He is known for chewing on his mouthguard.

Steph Curry has become known for chewing on his mouthguard during games. He has mentioned that chewing on it helps to calm him down. It is an especially important habit when he’s at the free-throw line, anything to keep him steady as he throws!

Certain fans have also found that – allegedly – he is even better at shooting when he is chewing on his mouthguard to the side rather than when it is in his mouth, as it is supposed to be! Take that with a pinch of salt – if superstitions work, why not use them?

27. He’s a big tech investor.

Steph Curry also appears to be very interested in technology. In 2023, he joined Simplicity, a Silicon Valley startup which has created an AI-driven platform to help everyday people to find all of the city services, news, and current events happening in their area.

28. Bogues was Curry’s favourite player.

Believe it or not, Steph Curry apparently took the biggest inspiration from Muggsy Bogues, one of the NBA’s shortest-ever players – while he was growing up. Bogues played on the same team as his father – and naturally, he took inspiration from his Dad, too!

29. He’s the Golden State mainstay.

The Golden State Warriors made a fantastic decision picking Curry all those years ago – he’s turned out to be the longest-tenured player in the team’s already lengthy history. He’s been with them for over 15 years at the time of writing!
